The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) quite obviously originates from Germany. The GSD was originally bred to be a working dog but over the years they have become more popular as guard/police dogs and family pets.

GSDs are not an old breed. They were first shown in 1882 but were not the types of GSD we are used to seeing today. They had mongrel-like features, were rough coated and had small tails. They were bred more and more over the years and the GSD you see today appeared around the second World War.

You may have heard of Alsatians. They are not a different breed. The GSD and Alsatian are one and the same. You won't believe how confused people get about this. During World War 1 and 2 they were named Alsatian Wolf Dog because it was believed that German Shepherd Dog would harm the breed's popularity (remember the world they lived in at the time). The official breed name in German is Deutscher Schäferhund but just stick with GSD/Alsatian if you don't speak German.

2009-07-04 [your naked night]: i like this, its very good

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Thank you, I'm in the process of moving everything into seperate wikis then I will continue writing :)

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Aw no :(

2009-07-04 [Nioniel]: The German Shepherd Dog (GSD), quite obviously originates from Germany. The GSD was originally bred to be a working dog, but over the years they have become more popular as guard/police dogs and family pets.
[Neither of the commas that you have in this first paragraph are neccesary. Also, when you say "official breed name", what do you mean by that?
Are you speaking in terms of the AKC or such?

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: GSDs are german, what do the AKC have to do with it? The name in German is their breed name.

2009-07-04 [Nioniel]: I guess it was just a bit confusing having the two different names up there...I know that the German name is obviously the one that is most correct (being a German dog and all(: ), I just thought that if you specified a bit more in the last paragraph, you do have three different names for the dog and it gets a bit confusing.
Thats all :)

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Ah okay, hang on

2009-07-04 [Nioniel]: :)
If you wanted more info on the GSD, I'll send it to you in a bit, I'm going to make lunch for my hubby and I and then I'll hook you up with some good stuff!
:)

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Thanks hun :)

2009-07-04 [Alexi Ice]: I have a german shepard and I love him!

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Aww, there must be pics! :)

2009-07-04 [Alexi Ice]: Alright...let me see what I can find.

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Put them in Show Off Your GSD! if you can find any :D

2009-07-04 [Alexi Ice]: I could find millions on my phone but it takes forever to upload. Ugh. Had to steal some from my myspace instead. Lol.

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: Haha okay :D

2009-07-04 [sequeena_rae]: I'm hoping to make a resource for bengal cats too when I have the time. I'm getting an F5 snowy rosetta, blue eyed bengal sometime next year, depending what litter I go for :D

2009-07-04 [Nioniel]: Ok, Dearie, here you go...
"Now a particularly well-known breed with staunch enthusiasts throughout the world, the GSD was developed in Germany and derived from old breeds of herding and farm dogs. The breed provides a widre range of sirvices to man. Used as war dogs, they later took part in police and security work, and are used as guide dogs and for guard, sniffer, and resuce work. This dog is an excellent obedience worker too. Slightly long in comparison to its height, the GSD is ideally 23-25 inches (57.5-62.5 cm) high, these proportions coupled with the position of the fore and hindquarters prodicing a far-reaching and enduring gait. The wight range is 75-95 lb (34-43 kg). Attentive, alert and resilient, the breed is steady of nerve, loyal, self-assured, courageous, and tractable and should never be over-aggressive or shy. For exhibition the coat should be straight, hard and as close lying as possible, with a thick undercoat."

Breed fact: during the first World War, the incredible number of 48,000 GSDs were enlisted with the German army, many taken forcefully from their owners.

2009-07-07 [sequeena_rae]: Now to add some more info. God I'll be here forever

2009-07-20 [Zab]: Schäfer is the swedish word too :P
Is yours a pure gsd? I've never seen a black one..

2009-07-20 [sequeena_rae]: Yeah she's purebred :p just like the white ones and every other colour XP

2009-07-20 [Zab]: Ours are broooownish xD well, I've seen a few white ones but most are like this <img:http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:wBmMi2utgOWm2M:http://www.sbk.nu/Temp/Thumb/-705730395_2275_4675.jpg> Never heard of other than that and white..

2009-07-20 [sequeena_rae]: Sky came from black and tan parents. It depends on the gene. [Artemis Riddle] has a black/red, I know someone with a longhaired white and you can also get liver and blue :) Black/tan is just the breed standard for showing.

2009-07-20 [Zab]: We had a longhaired black and tan before.. but she had bad hips... the breed is really going the wrong way, it's hard to find healthy shepherds nowadays.. :/
I like them tho. They have good heads.

2009-07-21 [sequeena_rae]: I agree though there are still some lovely working lines (Sky came from brilliant working parents). It's the show lines I'm worried about and the fact that people are breeding them without taking any of the necessary health tests. Hip/elbow displasia etc.

2009-07-21 [Zab]: Oh they do the tests here.. but then they say it's not bad enough to not breed on this lovely dog..O__o Even tho he couldn't walk untill he was 2 years old and his puppys has been put down.. ''it'll straighten up''..yeah.. >_>

The police is breeding their own shepherds, or changing breed.

2009-07-21 [sequeena_rae]: That's disgusting.

2009-07-22 [Zab]: I know. *sigh*
I dislike selected breeding.. most cases it ends up more and more extreme and that's never good,.. especially now when we don't really use our pets anymore.

2009-07-22 [sequeena_rae]: Reputable breeders only breed from good stock so there should NEVER be any problems (of course animals will always get ill, just like us).

2009-07-22 [Zab]: hahahahaha...yeah right..>_> you should tell them that. >_>
I'm more concerned about the judges at the shows.. if they hadn't rewarded the extreme -tha's even out of the breed description - there wouldn't be much people breeding it.

2009-07-22 [Zab]: <img:http://www.omsikkas.se/res/Schafer/utsi.jpg> Champion today.
Champion 1904 :
<img:http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:2Kz47_L5Jof1PM:http://www.brukswebben.se/AGS/sch.-Hussan-v-Mecklenburg.jpg>

Why has it changed so much to the extreme? It's obviously not healthy for the dogs.. so why? They even changed the breed specification to fit the new dogs.. O__o;

I love these dogs, some of the best dogs I've met has been german shepherds, and our Ceddie is part gsd.. But with how they're bred toay, I wouldn't dare buy any..

Yours look healthy enough tho.

2009-07-22 [sequeena_rae]: Show breeders are the worst I think.

My girl comes from working line stock, best dogs to always go for!

In the first pic mind it's possible it's just the way the GSD is standing. Showers train them to stand in a certain position - don't ask me why I have no clue o.O

2009-07-22 [Zab]: It's not just the standing position, I've seen too many live..

on a happer note; old pictues! :D Sadly I don't remember if that's our Desiree or if it's dogs we had before her..I don't think it's her, I remember her as more long haired.. >_> She was the best tho, lovely dog :) Had to be put down due to her hips later.. :/

And yes..that girl is me 18 years ago.. xD
<img300*0:stuff/zab18yeaago.jpg>

2009-07-22 [sequeena_rae]: Aww they're gorgeous :D

2009-08-02 [de Morte]: Oh, according to the vet I work with, the difference between a German Shepherd and an Alsatian Shepherd is in the size, we had a Alsatian in today, his proper weight is 100 pounds and his back is about 40 inches tall.

2009-08-02 [sequeena_rae]: Thanks! That's strange I've never heard of an Alsatian Shepherd though I have heard of an American Shepherd (which is basically a white GSD)
